Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell recently emphasized that the recent U.S. foreign aid package to Ukraine is a mere drop in the ocean for American taxpayers. During an interview with Fox News’ Dana Perino, McConnell downplayed the significance of the $61 billion aid package, stating that it only accounts for 0.2% of the U.S. GDP.

“In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a whole lot of money for us,” McConnell explained. “But for Ukraine, it’s a game-changer, providing them with the advanced weaponry they need to keep the Russians at bay.”

The senator highlighted the importance of this aid for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, noting that it does not involve any American boots on the ground.

“It’s a win-win situation,” he said, “as it helps Ukraine maintain its independence and weakens the military of one of our primary adversaries.”

The bipartisan-backed bill, which passed with a 79-18 vote, allocates $60 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel’s fight against Hamas, and approximately $4 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, it includes a provision that could lead to the banning of TikTok in the U.S. if the company refuses to divest.

McConnell also took aim at conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, accusing him of inciting negative sentiment towards Ukraine among Republican grassroots.

“I believe the demonization of Ukraine began with Tucker Carlson, who eventually found himself in the position of interviewing Vladimir Putin,” McConnell remarked.

“His influence on a large audience convinced many rank-and-file Republicans that supporting Ukraine was a mistake.”
