Under SB 1325, faculty and staff in Tennessee schools may carry concealed firearms if they possess a valid handgun carry permit and receive written authorization from school officials and law enforcement chiefs.

To qualify, personnel must undergo rigorous training, including 40 hours of basic school policing and a minimum of 40 hours of POST commission-approved training annually. They must also undergo fingerprinting, background checks, and psychological evaluations.

Governor Lee emphasized the importance of empowering districts with tools to enhance child safety, highlighting the bill’s significance.

The bill’s approval stirred controversy in the Tennessee House of Representatives, with chants of “Blood on your hands” echoing from the gallery. Protesters held signs decrying the legislation, reflecting the divisive nature of the issue.

The measure’s passage follows a tragic shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville last year, underscoring the urgency of enhancing school security.

While Governor Lee’s signature was unnecessary, school districts awaited his decision before implementing the policy.
