Authorities in Marin County are on high alert following the disappearance of Mint Butterfield, the 16-year-old offspring of Slack’s billionaire cofounder. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office issued a public alert via Nextdoor, disclosing that Mint vanished on Monday, April 22, after last being sighted in Bolinas, California, a small coastal town known for its bohemian vibes.
According to NBC Bay Area and other local outlets, Mint, who stands at 5 feet tall and weighs 100 pounds, was reportedly wearing a black sweatshirt and flannel pajama pants when last seen. The teen, sporting distinctive brown/reddish curly hair and pierced eyebrows, may have been carrying a gray suitcase. Officials suspect Mint may have headed toward San Francisco after leaving Bolinas.
While the Marin County Sheriff’s Office collaborates with the San Francisco Police Department to locate the missing teen, concerns heighten due to Mint’s history of substance abuse. Sources reveal Mint has been spotted previously in San Francisco’s Tenderloin area, a neighborhood notorious for its struggles with addiction and homelessness.
San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey took to X (formerly Twitter), urging anyone with information about Mint’s whereabouts to contact the authorities. Mint’s mother, Caterina Fake, residing in San Francisco, reported the disappearance, underscoring the family’s distress over the situation.
The ordeal adds another layer of complexity to the life of Mint’s father, Stewart Butterfield, who, after cofounding Flickr with Fake in 2004, went on to launch Slack before its acquisition by Salesforce for a staggering $28 billion. As authorities intensify efforts to locate Mint, they also emphasize the importance of seeking help for substance abuse, directing those in need to the SAMHSA helpline.
