Jim Jordan, the Ohio Republican chairing the House Judiciary Committee, has issued a subpoena demanding further information about the political activities of the daughter of New York State Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing Donald Trump’s case.
In a letter to Michael Nellis, a former senior advisor to Kamala Harris and the founder of Authentic Campaigns, Jordan accused Nellis of failing to comply with House investigators’ requests for documents related to Trump’s prosecution. Nellis’s company, Authentic Campaigns, provides a range of services including consulting, online fundraising, digital paid media, mobile messaging, creative content, and branding for political campaigns. It has worked with high-profile Democratic clients such as Vice President Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, and U.S. Representative Adam Schiff.
Earlier this month, the committee sent a letter to Loren Merchan, Judge Juan Merchan’s daughter and the president and partner at Authentic Campaigns, requesting records pertinent to their investigation into the case brought against Donald Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

In his letter on Wednesday, Jordan stated that Michael Nellis had refused to comply with previous requests, including one sent later in the month.
“As a result, the Committee has no option but to use compulsory measures,” Jordan wrote. He argued that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of a former President and current presidential candidate constitutes an unprecedented abuse of power. The Committee is particularly concerned with the impartiality of Judge Juan Merchan, the presiding judge, due to his refusal to recuse himself despite apparent conflicts of interest and biases.
Jordan highlighted one specific conflict: Loren Merchan’s role as the President of Authentic Campaigns and her work on behalf of President Trump’s political opponents. He suggested that there could be a potential financial benefit to Merchan and her company from Trump’s prosecution and conviction.
Jordan also noted that public reports indicate Loren Merchan and Michael Nellis were closely involved in the presidential campaigns of both President Biden and Vice President Harris.
“During Ms. Merchan’s employment with the Harris campaign, Authentic Campaigns received over $7 million in compensation for its services. You also worked for then-presidential candidate Harris, and it appears you continue to do so. Authentic Campaigns conducted work for the 2020 Biden-Harris campaign and, according to public records, was paid just over $2 million in a one-month period for its work,” he continued.
Compared to Jordan’s earlier request for information, the subpoena has a more limited scope. In a letter dated August 1st, he ordered Loren Merchan to turn over any and all documents pertaining to her work for Biden and Harris, as well as any that mentioned the prosecution or indictment of Trump.
Jordan is granting Nellis until September 13th to comply, as per the subpoena that the press was able to obtain.
In a post on X (Twitter) on Wednesday afternoon, Nellis responded to the subpoena by stating that the company was “thoroughly reviewing the subpoena with our legal team and will provide updates as soon as we have more information.”
“Let us be clear: these allegations against our company are completely false and purely politically motivated,” Nellis said. “This is a blatant attempt to intimidate us and divert attention from Donald Trump’s conviction. We refuse to be bullied, and we will not allow House Republicans or MAGA extremists to spread lies about our work. We remain steadfast in our mission and are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our friends and family during this time.”
Judge Merchan has faced accusations of political bias due to his daughter’s role at Authentic Campaigns and her political activities. Trump’s legal team had previously requested Merchan’s recusal before the trial commenced, but he declined.
A New York state ethics panel, predominantly comprised of Democrats, upheld Merchan’s decision in a ruling from June 2023.
Jordan contended that “Judge Merchan’s conflicts of interest and biases in the case against President Trump, the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, raise serious federal concerns.”
He emphasized that Congress has a crucial interest in safeguarding against politically motivated prosecutions of current and former presidents, particularly in cases where real or perceived biases are present. Jordan argued that if state or local prosecutors could pursue politically motivated cases against Presidents (current or former) for personal actions, it could significantly impact how presidents manage their powers while in office.
The original connection made between Merchan’s daughter and Authentic Campaigns was originally discovered by Laura Loomer.
Trump’s hearing is currently set for September 18th.
