Meta Platforms, Inc., the tech powerhouse behind Facebook and Instagram, has acknowledged that it “accidentally” censored a historic photo of a bloodied Donald Trump with his fist raised following a near-fatal assassination attempt on July 13th.
Initially, Facebook posts featuring this significant image were flagged as “misinformation,” with claims that the photo had been tampered with. The warning provided on the site noted, “Independent fact-checkers reviewed a similar image and determined it was altered in a way that could mislead viewers.”
On Monday, Dani Lever, a spokesperson for Meta, admitted that the controversial fact-check was indeed a mistake.
Lever further explained that their systems had mistakenly flagged the genuine photo due to its resemblance to a doctored version featuring smiling Secret Service agents. She clarified that the fact-checking error was a result of this mix-up and assured that the issue had been corrected.
“This was an error. The fact check was intended for a manipulated image with smiling Secret Service agents, but our systems incorrectly applied it to the authentic photo as well. We have resolved the issue and apologize for the mistake,” Lever posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Despite this, many prominent X users were skeptical of Lever’s explanation. One commenter questioned, “Does the job of lying shill ever get old?” Another user dismissed the apology, stating, “Yeah, NO ONE believes you.”
