Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York made history as the first member of the House’s progressive “squad” to lose a congressional seat on Tuesday, marking a significant setback for the Democratic left following a contentious internal battle.

The election in the outskirts of New York City largely revolved around divisions within the Democratic Party concerning Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Progressive advocacy groups mobilized to support Bowman, a vocal critic of the war, while pro-Israel political organizations poured unprecedented amounts of money into efforts to defeat him.

However, the campaign evolved beyond the Israel issue into a broader debate encompassing race, class, and the dynamics of the Democratic coalition. Bowman’s opponent, Westchester County Executive George Latimer, capitalized on traditional local alliances and capitalized on a series of missteps by the incumbent to secure victory.

AIPAC is rumored to have spent more than 16 million dollars on the contest in support of Bowman’s opponent. Soon after the race was called, many Democrats took to social media to state their opinion on AIPAC’s involvement.

If Democrats are going to be truly bothered by AIPAC’s involvement in American politics, they must be honest with themselves first. Often mislabeled as “far right”, AIPAC actually funds more liberal candidates than conservative ones. Notably, one of the most heavily funded AIPAC candidates this year is house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.

I completely understand why some Democrats would be upset about AIPAC’s involvement in Jamaal Bowman’s primary, however it remains to be seen if that same energy will carry into the funding of popular democrats.
