America First Legal (AFL), a conservative nonprofit organization, lodged a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Wednesday. The complaint targeted President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Bragg recently secured a conviction in a criminal trial involving former President Donald Trump.

Trump, widely expected to be the GOP’s presidential nominee in 2024, was convicted last month on 34 counts related to falsifying business records. These records were linked to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 presidential election. Daniels asserts that she engaged in a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, an allegation he vehemently denies. Throughout the legal proceedings, Trump has maintained his innocence, alleging that the case is politically motivated. His legal team plans to challenge the verdict through the appeals process.

Trump and his supporters have asserted that the prosecution was merely a Democratic maneuver to disrupt his potential reelection, though no substantiating evidence has been presented for these assertions.

AFL, helmed by Stephen Miller, a former senior advisor to Trump, lodged a complaint with the FEC on Wednesday against Bragg and Biden’s campaign, known as Biden for President. The complaint alleges “direct and significant violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act [FECA].”

In the filing, AFL clarified that according to FECA and FEC regulations, candidates and authorized committees are prohibited from knowingly accepting contributions from individuals exceeding a specified amount. For the 2024 election cycle, this specified amount is $3,300 per election.

Consequently, the group asserted, Biden’s campaign purportedly breached these regulations by “knowingly accepting an excessive contribution in the form of a coordinated expenditure.”

AFL further accused Biden’s campaign of failing to adequately disclose this “coordinated expenditure,” thus violating FECA and FEC regulations.

The significant question arises: why would Bragg extend what AFL terms as an “excessive contribution” to Biden?

AFL highlighted Matthew Colangelo, who served as Bragg’s senior counsel in the hush money case. Colangelo had previously held a senior position at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Prior to his tenure at the DOJ, Colangelo was associated with the New York attorney general’s office, where he worked on cases involving Trump and the Trump Foundation.

However, the Department of Justice, in a letter to House Republicans on Tuesday, stated that they “did not identify any instances of Mr. Colangelo having email communications with the District Attorney’s office during his time at the Department.”

In Wednesday’s complaint, AFL requested an investigation into the allegations, urging for a declaration that both Bragg and Biden’s campaign violated FECA and FEC regulations. They further demanded that the Biden campaign publicly report the “coordinated expenditures” and sought sanctions for the alleged violations. Additionally, AFL requested that the FEC take appropriate action, including referring the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution.

Dan Epstein, AFL’s vice president, stated in a press release on Wednesday, “Questions from the media and Congress, combined with the evident influence from the DOJ, the Manhattan DA’s office, and Bragg’s financial supporters who later influenced the Biden Administration, create a substantial likelihood of coordination between President Biden and Bragg.”

Epstein emphasized, “With the legal challenges before the FEC against candidate and former President Donald Trump, it’s crucial for the FEC to closely examine the relationship between President Biden, his administration, and his political committees, and the New York County DA’s Office’s political prosecution of the former President during a campaign year.”

Following Trump’s guilty verdict, Biden remarked to reporters that “the American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed.” He cautioned against baseless claims of rigging the verdict, stating, “It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, it’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict.”

Biden emphasized the enduring importance of the justice system, asserting, “Our justice system has endured for nearly 250 years, and it literally is the cornerstone of America. Our justice system should be respected, and we should never allow anyone to tear it down. It’s as simple as that. That’s America. That’s who we are, and that’s who we’ll always be, God willing.”
