AstraZeneca has announced the global discontinuation of its COVID-19 vaccine, Vaxzevria, attributing the decision to an “excess of newly updated vaccines” in the aftermath of the pandemic. The pharmaceutical giant is also set to revoke the vaccine’s marketing authorizations throughout Europe.
The company highlighted that the proliferation of variant-specific COVID-19 vaccines has created a glut in the market, significantly reducing the demand for Vaxzevria, which has ceased production and distribution.
Reports reveal that AstraZeneca has acknowledged in legal documents the occurrence of serious side effects linked to the vaccine, including blood clots and low levels of blood platelets.
The move to halt the vaccine was officially filed on March 5 and took effect on May 7, as reported by the Telegraph. Amidst dwindling sales of COVID-19 treatments, the Anglo-Swedish firm has shifted focus to other areas such as respiratory syncytial virus vaccines and obesity medications, embarking on numerous deals over the past year to diversify its portfolio.
