California Governor Gavin Newsom remarked on Friday that Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley has emerged as an unexpected asset for Democrats in the 2024 election cycle.

As Donald Trump’s sole remaining GOP challenger, Haley has consistently criticized the former president, questioning his age and warning of potential repercussions for the Republican Party due to his perceived “chaos.”

“I see her as one of the more effective advocates,” Governor Newsom, 56, told CNN’s Jake Tapper, praising Haley’s criticisms of Trump as “on point.”

Newsom expressed hope for Haley’s continued participation in the GOP primary, even as she trails Trump significantly in South Carolina’s upcoming primary, according to polling averages.

While Haley’s chances of securing the nomination appear slim, Newsom acknowledged Trump’s dominance in the race, stating, “Trump’s the nominee.”

Despite recognizing Haley’s slim odds, Newsom maintained respect for her and wished her well in challenging Trump’s candidacy, aligning with Democratic efforts to oppose the former president.

Haley’s campaign has sought support beyond traditional Republican circles, with a super PAC urging South Carolina Democrats to participate in the GOP primary. Additionally, her campaign has garnered significant financial support from donors who previously backed President Biden.

Undeterred by her initial primary losses, Haley affirmed her commitment to continue campaigning at least until the Super Tuesday contests on March 5, indicating a determination to present an alternative within the GOP.
