Mayor Eric Adams of New York City issued a stark warning about the city’s capacity, emphasizing the strain caused by the surging migrant crisis that is engulfing not just the Big Apple but major cities across the United States.

“Our hearts are boundless, but our resources are finite,” Mayor Adams recently conveyed to Fox Nation. “New York City acknowledges its identity as a city of immigrants with a rich history, but we cannot single-handedly bear the burden of a global issue. It’s unfair to New Yorkers and unfair to migrants.”

Despite New York City’s sanctuary city policies, Mayor Adams finds himself in a bind. The city is bursting at the seams, struggling to find accommodations for everyone, yet restricted by these policies from handing over repeat migrant offenders to ICE.

Compounding the issue is a “right to shelter” statute from the 1980s, which mandates housing for all individuals, further constraining the city’s options.

Speaking with FOX 5 New York’s Rosanna Scotto on “The Sanctuary Trap,” Mayor Adams stressed the city’s dire resource situation, emphasizing that all available space has been exhausted.

“This isn’t just rhetoric; we’re literally at capacity. Soon, people will have no choice but to sleep on the streets,” Mayor Adams asserted.

Asked what it would take to limit new arrivals, Mayor Adams explained his lack of authority to deny entry and the legal impediments preventing authorities from cooperating with ICE, even in cases of repeated criminal activity.

“The law prohibits us from contacting ICE. I can’t enforce or violate the law. I can’t deport. I can’t prevent repeat offenders or report them to ICE for deportation. There are limitations on what I can do,” Mayor Adams clarified.

Mayor Adams acknowledged ongoing legal challenges to the right to shelter rule, asserting that it was not intended for migrants and asylum seekers.

As news circulates about the migrant crisis straining resources, incidents of violent clashes between migrants and NYPD officers, and disruptions to education due to sheltering migrants in schools, “The Sanctuary Trap” provides an inside look at the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, which serves as the initial stop for asylum seekers in New York City.

The hotel serves as a relief center, offering essential services like food, vaccinations, and caseworker meetings for migrants.
