Reports have confirmed the shooter’s identity as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old transgender immigrant from El Salvador, according to sources speaking to KHOU 11 Jeremy Rogalski.

Moreno, previously known as Jeffery Escalante, has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 2005, as per Texas Department of Public Safety records.

His history of arrests is troubling, encompassing various offenses such as assault, forgery, theft, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Eyewitnesses recount Moreno’s disturbing appearance, dressed in a trench coat and accompanied by a child, as he entered the church armed with a long rifle.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner disclosed during a news conference that Moreno entered the church around 2 pm, accompanied by a child estimated to be 4 to 5 years old, and commenced firing.

Televangelist and pastor Joel Osteen, who was present at the news conference, described the incident occurring during a transition between services, underscoring the potential severity if it had happened during a peak service time.

The horrifying ordeal was partially captured on church video footage, which abruptly ended amidst gunfire and screams.

Two off-duty officers, one from the Houston Police Department and another from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, confronted the shooter, resulting in his being shot.

The child, whose relationship with Moreno remains undisclosed, sustained critical injuries in the shooting.

In the aftermath of the tragic event at Lakewood Church, scrutiny has turned to Moreno’s social media presence. His Instagram account, which remains active, showcases his affinity for firearms and indicates financial contributions to the church.

Moreno’s online activity also reveals political inclinations, with expressions of support for Bernie Sanders.
