OPINIONS:
The claim that the Biden administration is ignoring immigration laws has been a topic of political debate. It’s important to understand the complexity of immigration policy and the legal framework within which any U.S. administration operates.
The Biden administration has made several changes to U.S. immigration policy since taking office.
Some of the key areas where the Biden administration has made changes or faced criticism include:
1. Border Management
The administration has faced challenges in managing the surge of illegals at the U.S.-Mexico border. I argue that the administration’s policies have encouraged illegal immigration and overwhelmed border facilities.
2. Asylum Policies
The Biden administration has worked to reverse several Trump-era policies, including the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their U.S. court dates.
3. Title 42
Initially implemented under the Trump administration as a public health order during the COVID-19 pandemic, Title 42 allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Biden administration has continued to use Title 42 while facing pressure from both those who want it ended for humanitarian reasons and those who believe it’s necessary for border control.
4. Legal Immigration and RefugeesÂ
The administration has also proposed increasing the number of legal immigrants and refugees admitted to the U.S., arguing that this strengthens the economy and enriches American society, which I am stand in staunch opposition to.
I argue that the administration’s policies are perceived as a lack of enforcement and encourages illegal immigration and a strain resources.
It’s crucial to recognize that immigration policy is subject to laws passed by Congress, Executive Branch policies, and judicial rulings. The current laws are being ignored by the current Administration.
